My Alopecia Story
My hair starting thinning in 2003. I thought it was from my epidural 3 yrs before the birth of my daughter. I went to see the famous Dallas dermatologist, Dr. Blackburn & was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata. I started several rounds of "steroid injections" under Dr. Blackburn's care, with no improvements. Very emotionally drained, I took a break from all treatments. In 2005, I went to see another dermatologist, Dr. Narayana who performed a biopsy and sent it to the Hair Institute for Men. The results stated that the "premature balding" was from hot curlers & relaxers. This I did not believe at all. Fed up with all the experiments, I started wearing all types of extension hairstyles trying to hide my baldness. In December 2008, my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer & she lost all of her hair with the chemotherapy. I decided on July 3, 2009 that I would "strongly" support her and stop hiding my beauty by shaving my head completely. Yes, some people did think I was sick, some just starred & others complimented my "bald beauty"! I'm very happy & confident with my look & I used to say that I should have stayed with Dr. Blackburn in hopes of hair growth, but when I look back over the years, I would not trade it for anything! I'm proud to be an ALOPECIAN! I feel so free being ME!!!
